PROGRAM: Karen Knudsen, Senior Fellow at the East/West Center and Chair, Board of Directors for the Japan-American Society of Hawaii (JASH); and, Reyna Kaneko, President of JASH. Karen spoke about her and her husband’s involvement with the Peace Corps in the early 1970’s and the importance of overall diplomacy to reduce risk of conflict. Reyna spoke about the mission of JASH which is to “promote understanding and friendship between the people of the U.S. and Japan through the unique perspective of Hawaii since 1976.” JASH has many programs that involve the education and nurturing young leaders, business networking events, military programming, and annual fundraisers. ... Our speaker was Dan Dinell - Tree’s for Honolulu’s Future - a non-profit that connects people to resources to create a better future. He spoke about the importance of trees for our canopy and overall biosphere. “Honolulu is Hot, Trees are Cool.” Dan’s goal is three-fold: Educate, Advocate, and Facilitate. Honolulu is losing valuable tree canopy and therefore heat is increasing. Dan suggests several ways for mitigation: 1. Plant a Tree, 2. Ask City to plant it for you (duf@honolulu.gov), and 3.
